Book Review – Radical Candor

Share

This is a short read highlighting how to inculcate and build a culture of ruthless direct feedback as well as care and empathy within your organisation. This book seemed to have a solution to most of the problems I faced during my managerial journey and has laid down things in a pretty well laid out manner. A must read for anyone who aspires to be a good leader.

A quick summary of the key takeaways:

  1. Radical candor is the art of challenging your colleagues and direct reports directly for the quality of work they deliver and at the same time care personally for them and their growth.
  2. Care personally starts with career discussions, understanding the true aspirations and strength of your direct reports through 1:1s. The book outlines in detail how to conduct these and how often.
  3. Challenge directly starts with asking for and taking criticism well yourself and encouraging a culture of honest feedback within your team.
  4. The book also outlines in detail a template for what I see is a template for driving org wide initiatives: Listen > Clarify > Debate > Decide > Persuade > Learn.
